Frequently Asked Questions
What does this add-on do?
It lets authorized users upload a replacement for an existing Media Gallery image while retaining previous image files.
Will replacing an image remove its comments or ratings?
No. Comments, ratings, reactions, ownership, and the gallery URL stay with the existing media item.
Where is the replacement option?
Select
Image versions on the media page or in the gallery lightbox.
Why can’t I see Image versions?
Your user group needs
Replace images and view previous versions under Media Gallery permissions. Native edit permissions, edit time limits, and category overrides also apply. Super-admin status alone does not grant access.
Who can download previous versions?
Users who currently have permission to view, edit, and replace that image. History access ends if their edit time limit expires.
Can I restore an older image?
Yes—download it from the history and upload it as a new replacement. There is no one-click restore.
Which files are supported?
Configured JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP images. Mirrored or shared attachments, embedded media, video, and audio cannot be replaced.
Do upload limits and watermarks still apply?
Yes. Native upload validation and watermark rules apply. Re-uploading an already watermarked file may apply another watermark.
Does version history use storage space?
Yes. Previous files remain until the media item is permanently deleted or the add-on is uninstalled. There is no automatic pruning. Replacement quota checks include retained history, but native gallery quota displays do not.
Why does an old image still appear after replacement?
Your browser or CDN may have cached it. Refresh the page or purge the relevant cache.
How do I upgrade?
Install the newer ZIP through Admin CP → Add-ons.
Do not uninstall first, because uninstalling removes version history.
What versions are supported?
The add-on targets XenForo and XFMG 2.3+. Source checks were completed against 2.3.13; live end-to-end testing and individual checks of other 2.3 releases remain pending.
